Mother's Day - Poetry

Poems have that ability to touch anyone's heart. Sometimes it is difficult to actually express in words - like in proper sentences, what you feel very someone close to you, someone like your mother! But with poetry you don't have to worry about grammar and sentence construction! All that it requires is to pour your heart out.

Take a look at these wonderful poems about mothers, that I got from this place.

A Child's Angel

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.
So one day he asked God:

They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow
but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?

Among the many angels, I chose one for you.
She will be waiting for you and will take care of you.

But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything else but sing and smile,
that's enough for me to be happy.

Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day.
And you will feel your angel's love and be happy.

And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me,
if I don't know the language that men talk?

Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear,
and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.

And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?

Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.
I've heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?

Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life.
But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.

Your angel will always talk to you about me and
will teach you the way for you to come back to me,
even though I will always be next to you.

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven,
but voices from earth could already be heard,
and the child in a hurry asked softly:

Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's name.
Your angel's name is of no importance, you will call your angel: Mommy

Wonderful Mother

God made a wonderful mother,
A mother who never grows old;

He made her smile of the sunshine,
And He moulded her heart of pure gold;

In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
In her cheeks fair roses you see;

God made a wonderful mother,
And He gave that dear mother to me.

That Wonderful Mother of Mine

The moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of that wonderful mother of mine.

The birds never sing but a message they bring
Of that wonderful mother of mine.

Just to bring back the time, that was so sweet to me,
Just to bring back the days, when I sat on her knee.

I pray ev'ry night to our Father above,
For that wonderful mother of mine.

I ask Him to keep her as long as He can
That -- wonderful mother of mine.

There are treasures on earth, that made life seem worthwhile,
But there's none can compare to my mother's smile.

You are a wonderful mother, dear old Mother of mine.
You'll hold a spot down deep in my heart,

'Till the stars no longer shine.
Your soul shall live on forever,

On through the fields of time.
For there'll never be another to me,
Like that wonderful Mother of mine.

Mother's Day - Interesting facts!

Not only humans, even the Animal Kingdom displays varied signs of 'unusual motherhood'. These are just a few, for more you can have a look here!

A baby baleen whale depends on its mother's milk diet for at least six months.

A baby Harp seal doubles its weight in only five days after birth, thanks to the amount of protein in its mother's milk. It takes a horse sixty days to double its birth weight.

A female kangaroo that has become a recent mother holds a reserve embryo inside of her after her first baby has crawled into her pouch. This embryo is an "emergency back-up" baby, should the first one die prematurely.

A female oyster over her lifetime may produce over 100 million young.

A mother giraffe often gives birth while standing, so the newborn's first experience outside the womb is a 1.8-meter (6-foot) drop.

If frightened or threatened, a mother rabbit may abandon, ignore, or eat her young.

In 340 B.C., Aristotle observed that dolphins gave birth to live young that were attached to their mothers by umbilical cords. For this reason, he considered dolphins and related creatures to be mammals. Twenty-four centuries later, biologists agreed with him.

Mother Mexican free-tailed bats find and nurse their own young, even in huge colonies where many millions of babies cluster at up to 500 bats per square foot.

Just like people, mother chimpanzees often develop lifelong relationships with their offspring.

Kittens are born both blind and deaf, but the vibration of their mother's purring is a physical signal that the kittens can feel - it acts like a homing device, signaling them to nurse.

Mother's Day - Unusual Mothers!

Our mom's are the best gift that we can recieve in life. And every one of them are unique in their own way... now what I want to say is there are few special women who are rather unusual! Here's some information that I found here, where we celebrate 'unusual mothethood'!

The youngest mother whose history is authenticated is Lina Medina, who delivered a 6½-pound boy by cesarean section in Lima, Peru in 1939, at an age of 5 years and 7 months. The child was raised as her brother and only discovered that Lina was his mother when he was 10.

On April 9, 2003, Satyabhama Mahapatra, a 65-year-old retired schoolteacher in India, became the world's oldest mother when she gave birth to a baby boy. Satyabhama and her husband had been married 50 years, but this is their first child. The baby was conceived through artificial insemination using eggs from the woman's 26-year-old niece, Veenarani Mahapatra, and the sperm of Veenarani's husband.

Bobbie McCaughey is the mother who holds the record for the most surviving children from a single birth. She gave birth to the first set of surviving septuplets - four boys and three girls -on November 19, 1997, at the University Hospital, Iowa, US. Conceived by in vitro fertilization, the babies were delivered after 31 weeks by caesarean in the space of 16 minutes. The babies are named Kenneth, Nathaniel, Brandon, Joel, Kelsey, Natalie and Alexis.

Jayne Bleackley is the mother who holds the record for the shortest interval between two children born in separate confinements. She gave birth to Joseph Robert on September 3, 1999, and Annie Jessica Joyce on March 30, 2000. The babies were born 208 days apart.

Elizabeth Ann Buttle is the mother who holds the record for the longest interval between the birth of two children. She gave birth to Belinda on May 19,1956 and Joseph on November 20, 1997. The babies were born 41 years 185 days apart. The mother was 60 years old when her son Joseph was born.

The highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782) of Shuya, Russia. Between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 confinements, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. 67 of them survived infancy.

The modern world record for giving birth is held by Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile. Leontina claims to be the mother of 64 children, of which only 55 of them are documented. She is listed in the 1999 Guinness World Records but dropped from later editions.

Katherine Hepburn's father was a surgeon and her mother was a dedicated suffragette and early crusader for birth control.

Kim Basinger's mother had been a champion swimmer who performed water ballets in several Esther Williams movies in the 1940s.

Laura Dern earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her illuminating performance as the title character in Rambling Rose, an underrated picture in 1991 that also won a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her mother, Diane Ladd. This was the first time a mother-daughter team had been so honored; they became the first mother and daughter ever nominated for Academy Awards for the same movie.

Mother's Day - Mom-To-Be!

It is often said that the experience of being a Mother, is simply indescribable! This is something that I have also seen my sis, Joan experience. Her mood swings were simply terrible at times... but the far away look in her eyes when she was planning ahead for the baby is something not to be missed.

It is always a great feeling to know that there's a baby coming in the family. And nothing compares to the joy and anticipation that fills the heart of the parents. The would-be-mom is the center of attention for the coming months. Her every wish is almost a command for the family members. It is such an instinctive feeling to be happy when you come to know of the 'stork paying a visit', even if its not your own. But along with the feeling of joy, is also a fear of the unknown – the anxiety and fear that usually accompanies childbirth! I remember my sister saying that, it's such a mixed feeling about the new baby that's on the way. Some days, you might be really excited about it and on some you can be really down thinking about all things that could possibly go wrong.

But, I guess it's a tad difficult for guys to really understand what any woman goes through! All we can do is pray that the women in our lives have a safe and happy pregnancy – filled with lots of fun, laughter and excitement for the new arrival!

Mother's Day - Facts and Figures

The modern version of Mother's Day in the United States, was first observed in 1907. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia decided that it would be a wonderful way to honor her deceased mother. Two years later, Jarvis and friends began a letter-writing campaign to create a Mother's Day observance. Soon after, in 1914, the US Congress passed legislation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Mother's Day - Wish a Single Mother a Happy Mother's Day

To Single Mothers With Love...

"M" is for the million things she gives

"O" means only that she is growing old

"T" is for the tears she shed to save me

"H" is for her heart of pure gold

"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining

"R" means right, and right she'll always will be,

Put them all together

They spell MOTHER...

A word that means a world to me...

If being a mother is a labor of love, then being a single mother requires double the labor and double the love. Without a father around, single mothers have to give twice the hugs, twice the affection, and twice the attention, with half the time, half the energy and often, half the resources.

Just about everyone knows a single mom. The U.S. Census Bureau says almost a third of all U.S. children are being raised in a single-parent home headed by a woman. But do we ever look beyond the statistics and think about what it really takes to parent without a partner?

Some of the highest hurdles single moms face are financial. The day-to-day challenges of meeting basic needs. Only half the mothers due child support get the full amount; 25 percent get nothing at all. Therefore it's not surprising that almost 50 percent of single moms and their children live in poverty, compared to eight percent of families with a married mom and dad.

And whatever your opinion of single motherhood, most women who are single parents probably didn't set out with that as a goal. Divorce accounts for 46 percent of all single parent households, unwed mothers 25 percent, marital separation 21 percent, and death of a spouse seven percent. But no matter why a mother is on her own, we need to encourage these women and the 14 million children living in their homes.

We should all consider how we can make the day in and day out job of single parenting easier. If a single mother also works outside the home, her mom duties resume as soon as she walks in her front door. Want to see her face light up? Fix dinner for her family and have it ready when she arrives.

Childcare demands are also tougher when it's only mom doing the picking up and dropping off for ballet, baseball, or band practice. Find out who the single moms are among your children's circle of friends, and see if you can take some of their taxi duty. Perhaps you can help a single mom by mowing her yard, running an errand for her, or washing her car. You can even get your own children involved. In the process, they'll learn lessons in kindness, hospitality, and giving.

If you really want to make her day, offer to watch her kids while she spends an evening with a friend or a relaxing day at the park or beach. It's tough being a single mother and not always easy to ask for help.

So think about the challenging ways that single moms' lives are different from other mothers'. Then think about how they are the same. All mothers have hopes and dreams for their children, but single mothers have to do their hoping and dreaming alone.

HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY..

Mother's Day - Trivia, Folk Customs, Myths and Fun Facts from Around the World

George Washington once said, "My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her."

Not only for George Washington, this is true for all. For every guy, his mother is the first woman in his life and this leads to a great bond forever! Here's a few trivia on Mother's Day that I found... for more you can pay a visit here!

Rosa Parks was the mother of bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama that launched the Civil Rights Movement.

Chinese family names are often formed (begin) with a sign that means "mother". It's a nice way of honoring their moms long past.

The ancient Greeks celebrated Mother's Day in spring, like we do. They used to honor Rhea, "mother of the gods" with honey-cakes and fine drinks and flowers at dawn. Sounds like the beginnings of the Mother's Day tradition of breakfast in bed!

Mother Shipton was a Prophetess in Britain 500 years ago. She could see the future, and predicted that another Queen Elizabeth would sit on the throne of England. (QE II)

Japan's Imperial family trace their descent from Omikami Amaterasu, the Mother of the World.

Mother's Day - Customs and Traditions

Mothers' day is a day celebrated to honor and give tribute to our dear mothers, who shower their endless love on us and expect nothing in return. A mother's only wish in life is her child's happiness. Mothers' day celebration is a western world concept that is spreading its influence on other nations too. But every nation has its own peculiar way of commemorating this special day of mothers.

As a part of mother's day customs in America, children call up their mother and wish her happy mothers day. They present their mom with wonderful mothers day gifts baskets. Earlier this day used to primarily focus on mothers, but now the celebration is dedicated to all women, then be it mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters etc. Most of the families plan out a nice getaway trip on this day.People generally send cards and flowers to their moms, grandmas, stepmoms, godmothers, surrogate mothers, sisters, daughters, in-laws, wife, friends who’re mothers, to the mom-to-be’s and many more to wish them a “Happy Mother’s Day”. Statistics show that the florists record stupendous rise in their trade-graph on the occasion of Mother’s Day and the cards-sale skyrocket incredibly to meet the emotional demands of the mother-child relationship. Most surveys conducted so far, have given this result that the mothers, indeed, look forward to receiving at least a card or two every year on Mother’s Day. A mom simply loves to hear the sweet ‘I Love You’ from her children; she longs for that warm heartfelt greeting on Mother’s Day. For, it’s not just A card to her, it’s THE card which helps her know how much she’s been remembered and appreciated on her special day.

Quite commonly, the MOM is given a day off from all her daily chores on Mother’s Day—be it indoors or out. This is a day when every mom should just relax and get thoroughly pampered. Right from bringing her breakfast to bed, loading her with gifts and greetings, to taking her to dine at her favorite food joint—the mom or the mom-figure gets the centre-stage on Mother’s Day and enjoys all the love and affection of those whom she’s nurtured so long with her endless care and protection.

Now there’s this one common custom or convention to Mother’s Day observances—preparing a cake for mom. This cake has long been associated with the Mother’s Day celebrations and today, many children make it a point to bake a sweet cake for their mamma dear on Mother’s Day. Apart from that, writing letters to mom is yet another common practice for Mother’s Day, especially for people who stay in a different state or country and can’t meet their mothers quite often.

Far or near, young or old, single or married, working or at-home, modern or retro—make each mother on this planet feel warm all over in all your love and wishes on Mother's Day. The spotlights are on her on Mother’s Day ! And, of course, she deserves it. So give her the joys that she brought to you through all your growing years on Mother’s Day. So take this chance and wish your dear Mom a Happy Mothers Day

Mother's Day - History and Origin

The earliest traces of Mother’s Day celebrations can be found in Greece and Rome. The ancient Greeks held a spring festival in honor of Rhea, the mother of the Greek gods. And the Romans had Cybele, their mother goddess, to honor with an annual celebration. These evolved in the much later Christian celebration to honor mother Mary on the fourth Sunday in Lent (the forty-day period till Easter). This Sunday popularly came to be called the Mothering Sunday in England and Scotland and gradually became a day to honor all the mothers there. Mothering Sunday is still very much a celebration in Great Britain.

Now, the Mother’s Day celebrations in the United States are credited to one woman named Anna Marie Jarvis, whose consistent efforts to create a day especially for mothers finally made the US who’s who sit up and consider recognizing a Mother’s Day every year. Her mother, Anna Maria Reeves Jarvis, played an active role in improving worker health conditions and is remembered still for her notable healing expeditions during the Civil War. And when she died on May 9, 1905, her daughter Miss Jarvis took up the cause of a truly recognized Mother’s Day celebration to honor her own mother Mrs. Anna Jarvis as well as all the other mothers around the world. Acknowledging the growing neglect of American parents in particular, she embarked on her crusade to establish a national observance of Mother’s Day. To pay tribute to her late mom, she held a church service at the Andrews Methodist Church on May 12, 1907. She gave white carnations to all who attended the memorial ceremony as carnations were Mrs. Jarvis’ favorite blooms. It was from then that she committed her life to the mothers’ cause.

Miss Anna Jarvis succeeded in making her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia celebrate a Mother’s Day on the death anniversary of Mrs. Jarvis. Church services were held there on May 10, 1908 in memory of Anna’s mother and a similar observance followed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the next year. This is considered the very first Mother’s Day celebrations in the United States of America.

Thereafter, Miss Jarvis ran from pillar to post to make Mother’s Day an official holiday in her country. She led campaigns, talked to political parties, wrote letters to ministers, businessmen and fostered in them a need to establish a national Mother’s Day. Her efforts finally bore fruit in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be celebrated as Mother’s Day and made it a national holiday. Since then, Mother’s Day has been celebrated in the US every year on the second Sunday in May. However, Mother’s Day celebrations existed in many parts of the country even before this declaration. But with President Wilson’s official announcement of 1914, Mother’s Day got its due recognition and started taking shape of a worldwide celebration. Currently, Mother’s Day is celebrated in almost all parts of the world, though on different dates in the year.

Mother's Day - A Tribute to the Most Important Woman of your Life

A mother’s important to us everyday, of course, but Mother’s Day is to make HER feel important ! And, if you hold that Mother’s Day is just meant for your mamma, you’re laboring under a delusion. For, Mother’s Day is not just about mothers or the mom-to-be’s, you can also make your grandma or aunt or sis or any motherly person feel just as special on this day of the year.
When it comes to this one single day specially designed for mothers, the Mother’s Day, you have greater reasons to make them feel loved and cared for. Usually celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day is on May 13th this year. But generally speaking, Mother’s Day is to make all the wonderful moms of the world feel right on top of the world and Mother’s Day gives every child a chance to say “I love you, Mom”.

No matter what the distance, Mother’s Day is sure to bring each soul closer to their Mammas or Mommies in every possible way. Sending cards, flowers, gifts on Mother’s Day is a very common practice every year. And if you can’t catch someone over the phone on Mother’s Day, don’t start cursing the operators or take it out on your poor defenseless telephone set. Get this straight—the telephone lines ARE supposed to stay jammed for the most part on Mother’s Day (courtesy: the innumerable sons’ and daughters’ sudden need to make their mom’s feel special, and that too, for hours). But as long as the Moms are happy, everything’s worth it !

Then again, if you’re planning to treat your buddies or your sweetheart to dinner on May 14, you’re all set to regret ! If not drop the idea, prepare yourself to stand in a long queue. Come on, it’s not just ANY day friend, it’s Mother’s Day !

Everyone looks forward to doing something over-the-top for his/ her mom on Mother’s Day. And as long as they can get that smile and glow on their moms’ faces, the day’s done. And well…if not on Mother’s Day, then when ? So do your bit to make your ‘mom sweet mom’ feel just GREAT on May 14. Love her, pamper her, spend time with her and let her have her day ! And wherever you are, don’t forget to wish her with a sweet and warm “Happy Mother’s Day” !
